I sometimes forget that the midwest includes a few cities that aren’t technically farm towns, but I always think of places like Ohio/Michigan as the north, not the midwest. Maybe not the highest per capita or best educated, but at least industrialized as opposed to agrarian. But regardless of what is taught, the point is that in such places often the indoctrination is so strong in youth that, although the science is taught, it is mbumively rejected. I’ve got friends that collect and disseminate some of the most lovely essays they have graded as TAs, and it’s pretty amazing to see how people will take a subject like twin studies (in the context of nature v nurture) and turn their papers into a rant about how evolution is a lie. 	Religious players Shii, your godlove is much appreciated and all but a bit of a derail. The god or not issue has been debated in other threads. Plenty of scientists like to use god as the black box until they get finer tools, and then put god as the new black box at the new edge of measurability. Again, the heart of this discussion is organized religion in general. Their methods of operation, depending on the particular church, range from simple high pressure coersion to flat out terrorism (both foreign and domestic). Hell, Rajneespuram managed to convince PhDs and other intellectuals to become gun-toting martyrdom-ready guardsmen as Rajneesh reaped in millions through donations and hostile takeover of the local town. Smaller cults, the kinds that make the news, get mocked because they tend to be small and fleeting. However, I’d posit that a hundred Jonestowns would be FAR better for society than the tiniest fragment of catholicism, simply because of the volumes of falsified histories and ancestral ties people have to the church, because it’s just one more reason for idiots to turn off their brains and blindly follow the whims of the reigning regressive guy in the funny hat. I don’t believe in any specific religion’s definition of ‘God’, because even at the most basic level, the concept of ‘God’ is beyond normal human ken. To apply any specific rules or titles to the divine is simply ludicrous. God simply is, regardless of what Man has chosen to write on paper and claim to be fact. Organized religions are simply an attempt to control the idea of God for personal gain, or else to create a structure of reference that the human mind can perceive comfortably. That which a Muslim calls Allah is no different than that which a Jew calls Yahweh, or a Christian calls Jehovah. These names mean nothing to an infinite, divine being. They only mean something to Man. See, that’s my point. I don’t see the difference between a cult and a religion. Yet religious people can recognize and ostracize cults. How, exactly, does one manage to get into the ancient pantheon like that in modern times? 	Religious players So this is an issue I’ve been thinking a lot about lately. Sure, there have been some pretty serious (and some unfortunately trollish) debates about whether or not god is real; however, there hasn’t been much lively discussion about religions themselves. What I want to understand is how a fundamentally rational human being can ever continue to be part of a religion. Yes. I get it. as a child, you don’t have a choice. There are cognitive psychologists that liken early religious indoctrination to mental terrorism. You are raised how you are raised, and you can’t exactly choose another option under most cirgreat timesstances, as, just like cults, religions demand the indoctrination of your kin and the conversion of any non-believer into your own faith. What I don’t get is how, after receiving an education, (which, tragically, is apparently not available to most southern or rural areas [See: The University of Alabama, any university in the midwest, any university in Texas; the list goes on]) one can still be religious. If you have a degree from a worthwhile university (and didn’t **** away your four years just drinking/doing drugs) you are capable of forming rational arguments and thinking logically. How, at that point, can you not cast off the chains that bind you earlier in your life? Are you afraid? If god is gone, suddenly that magical cushion that protects you isn’t there? Isn’t that argument bull**, since, well, according to the religions, god exists regardless of whether or not you buy into their faith? Don’t you worry about picking the wrong god? There are a lot of options. Some have messiahs, some have messiahs that came after the other messiahs, others think that there is a pantheon at place…why are you so sure your god is THE god? Didn’t you ever question the whole tithing thing? At what point does that -not- strike you as a tax imposed upon you by charlatans in exchange for snake oil in the form of warm feelings and a wonderful afterlife? Is it because of all the ‘good’ your religion does? Have you forgotten the wars caused by all of the current religious organizations (, even the Tibetans are stirring ** up in China now)? What about the wonders of abstinence only sex education you fight for, or the stripping of civil rights from people that have never done anything to harm you (and are in cases introduced to a lifestyle you do not approve of by your own sick, perverted, pedophilic spiritual advisors.) Studies in cog psych have shown that the hierarchical power structures of all corporations (a term which, obviously, encompbumes all religions as organizations) lead inevitably to corruption. In the face of all of this sheer detriment to humanity, how is it possible for a sane, rational, adult human being to NOT reject the tenets of whatever faith was unfairly thrust upon them in their youths? 	Notifications on banner and character select pane The problem is I always directly tubmail my ideas to ET, and while he is very receptive and responsive, the ideas fade as his TM fills up, his staff gets on to more important other stuff, and I forget what I’ve subbed. 	Notifications on banner and character select pane I propose the following notification changes/additions: Banner (All of these would be placed to the left of the character’s name, same as the new tubmail notification currently): – Add an icon link for deliveries, tubmails, kyoubai, and domination – The deliveries icon (Log in to see images! would work well) would obviously link to deliveries if you have them, or be greyed out if you have none to collect. – The tubmail icon would simply be permanently there, but grey out if there are no unread messages. – The kyoubai icon (a miniature bidsquid, maybe) would link to your bids. Highlighted when you are outbid, greyed out if you are still winning all of your bids. – Domination (no idea what the best icon would be as I don’t actually play dom, but people might like this) could notify you when you’ve lost the lead or been screwed or something I don’t know/care Char select pane: All the same notifications, but in another column to the right of the character to which they pertain.
