Four pages about emo and no mention of Weezer? Say it ain’t so! (You see what I did there?)
Seriously, though, Weezer did more to define what emo is than anyone else, and they were the first (or maybe second, if you include the already-mentioned and ****ing awesome Fugazi) to make emo mainstream. Like it or not, bands like Fuel, NIN, MCR, The Fray, HIM, and a thousand others owe the fact that it’s cool to write depressing songs to Rivers & Co.

Ignoring the obvious pun:
I wasn’t saying that “mainstream emo” is a good thing, but I WAS saying that emo became a mainstream concept (and thus integrated into many genres of music) because of Weezer. I chose Pinkerton to represent Weezer for a reason: it was their least poppy and most emo album.
Anyway, you wouldn’t want to emo-knife-fight with me. I’ve had plenty of practice cutting myself, and I’d cut you like you were my wrist on Valentine’s Day. Log in to see images! |

Log in to see images! Now this brings me back to the days when this **** was the real-deal. Dirty kids in high-water cords, crashing on the couches of art collectives, eating hare krsna meals or food not bombs every day, and emo shows that never once made you think about love or depression- just anger, seething hate, alienation, and hostility. Politics too! The idea of the sg with a marshall stack was redefined from arena rock staples to feedback machines; tools you had to beat against one another to produce the desired effect.
Indian Summer epitomized the early emocore sound. They harnessed the feedback and distortion and filtered them through a diy punk aesthetic which all but guaranteed a (posthumous) cult following. Log in to see images!
Here we have every lick shredded by what is without a doubt once of the most definitive bands in emo history: Indian Summer- Science Discography Indian Summer- Live at the Blue Universe Log in to see images! Log in to see images! |
