Ave Maria? Did you take a break from caroling to go to Mbum? |

Ave Maria was considered a caroling option when I was younger. Log in to see images!
So was this.
Sleigh bells ring, are you listening, In the lane, snow is glistening A beautiful sight, We’re happy tonight. Walking in a winter wonderland.
Gone away is the bluebird, Here to stay is a new bird He sings a love song, As we go along, Walking in a winter wonderland.
In the meadow we can build a snowman, Then pretend that he is Parson Brown
He’ll say: Are you married? We’ll say: No man, But you can do the job When you’re in town.
Later on, we’ll conspire, As we dream by the fire To face unafraid, The plans that we’ve made, Walking in a winter wonderland.
In the meadow we can build a snowman, And pretend that he’s a circus clown We’ll have lots of fun with mister snowman, Until the other kids knock him down.
When it snows, ain’t it thrilling, Though your nose gets a chilling We’ll frolic and play, the Eskimo way, Walking in a winter wonderland. |

I’ve never really considered the lyrics of this song but they are actually sort of sinister. I get the bluebird not being around in the winter but just what is this “new bird” that won’t leave? And that whole conspire by the fire to face our plans unafraid? They are plotting a violent overthrow of the government or something, aren’t they? |

I think it has something to do with this

Also – “The original recording was by Richard Himber and his Hotel Carelton Orchestra on RCA Bluebird”.
So I bumume the “bird” lyrics had something to do with their dissatisfaction with the record company. |

Hmm…excellent research Catt – that makes sense. I can only imagine there was a fierce bidding war for the Hotel Carlton Orchestra once they were unfettered from Bluebird! |

I’ve long considered it to be the seasonal equivalent, lyrically, of… scully edited this message on 12/12/2010 5:20PM |
