this is true, you have to be devoted to the fact that if you’re wrong, you’re ****ed. (at least if you even bother to think about it at all)

Not really. The atheist is only ****ed if he’s wrong depending upon who is right.

Well, what if the Hindus are right? Then it doesn’t matter what you believe, so long as you’re not a douche (in which case I’m ****ed). What if the old tyme vikings were right? Then it doesn’t matter what you believed, so long as you die in battle you’re good. Or what if the ancient Egyptians were right? Then it doesn’t matter what you believed or did, only what your heart weighs. Or what about the scientologists? Then the atheists are right about eternity anyway. Or…

If there’s more than one religion for which it’s true that you’re ****ed if you don’t follow it (bumuming they mutually forbid following other religions) then this sort of logic comes down to a choice of which particular ****ing you’d most want to avoid.

Since we don’t know for sure that any of these eschatological ****ings even exist, I’ll choose to make life on Earth a higher priority than a hypothetical afterlife. Part of that being to not waste time, energy or money on bull**** religious practice. Avoiding feeling like a mbumive tool also.

Besides, you’re bumuming that god would be satisfied with lip service, it’s not like I can consciously choose to believe in something I think is ridiculous and incoherent.

If you ask a catholic priest or muslim cleric whether god would be satisfied with lip service, the answer will be a resounding yes. Just show up to church every Sunday and go through the motions and God won’t have any problem with you.

That’s the premise of Pascal’s wager which I’m sure you are familiar with and already have a prepackaged answer for Log in to see images!

Actually, that’s the rub, they want you to ACTUALLY believe. Pascal never took into account that you were just pretending so as to please god. Well, a number of Catholics would say confession is enough, but most Christians require the whole thing.

That was my pre-packaged answer to Pascal’s wager – more than one religion make mutually incompatible claims that not believing in them specifically will lead to damnation, and it bumumes that god would reward some huckster for playing the odds while sending to hell the atheist with integrity who refused to lie about his true beliefs. If god’s that petty a tyrant, I’d sooner go to hell then bend knee.

Sure, priests and clerics might say that lip service is all it takes (or death-bed conversion, or whatever fruity little ritual they’ve cooked up) but I wouldn’t trust a cleric to know the mind of god any more than the next man; if they’re advocating lip service they likely just want an bum on a pew and more money in the collection plate.

False. Most Christians of course consider truly believing to be better, but not believing and still going through the motions is still good enough for almost all of them.

Really, go ahead and ask.

And I also read (can’t show you any studies) that if you start out not believing, but just go through the motions anyway, after 10 or so years you WILL actually start believing. It’s funny how the brain will change its mind to keep itself from going insane.

I have. Many times. And sat through countless sermons over my 20 years as a christian explaining how people who just do the rituals are “dead inside” and “not true christians”. Aside form some Catholic dogma about absolution being sufficient, the rest either try to pretend that lip service is impossible or simply dodge teh question.
