So my laptop (vista) takes a hard hit and I restart it and get this unmountable_boot_volume blue screen. I tried all the self-correcting stuff in the limited service mode thing. I run the self repair thing and on the second time it restarts and Yay! I get my login screen, login, theres my walpaper all my ****..
Except not yay, because this **** is slow as ****. Firefox won’t respond. Windows explorer (files) will give me like a white window and after five minutes of waiting I just shut it off. ctrl alt del does jack **** — no response there. It just runs like shiiiiiiit.
Safe mode seemed a little more promising, it ran pretty good… and then I learned like all my system restore points are deleted that might have helped… so… ****…
What’s wrong with my comp? |

I’m gonna say something is ****ing with your OS, that’s the unmounted boot drive thing.
Back up everything, delete everything, and run an OS recovery disk is your best bet. |

That’s what sucks though. I don’t even got a disk. I kept all the crap with it in a box and the only disc I got is the “upgrade anytime” disc. |

Sorry, I don’t know. I had a problem like this before, my laptop just had a completely blank screen upon starting up. I solved it by going into Safe Mode and using System Restore, but you already said that’s out of the question. I’ll try my best to help you, but for now, I don’t know. Sorry Log in to see images! |

It’s definitely the hard drive mount or whatever got jostled initially, but it’s weird because obviously it’s accessing it ok because I’m not getting that error it starts it’s just **** when it’s not in safe mode.
Edit: And I didn’t drop it btw it was slapped on top of the lid hard by a crazy **** who thinks I pay more attention to it than her…...... Celerysteve edited this message on 03/29/2010 10:02PM |

It was three years ago and I got it for cheap so I doubt the warranty… wait I’ll check… Yeah, it’s not under warranty. I’m sure I’ll fix this ****. The question is how much of a pain in the bum it’s going to be. |

Slowness could be due to read errors; the drive’s integrity might be questionable if it was really hit hard.
If I were you I’d back up whatever you can immediately, reboot into safe mode and run ‘chkdsk /r’ from a command prompt. If it returns a significant number of bad sectors you may have a faulty drive. |

Actually doing that right now, I had to restart and I booted it again in safe mode and it’s been stuck on “loading windows files” screen for like over 5 minutes. |

If you can’t boot to disk I’d get on whatever computer you can and download a copy of BartPE, burn it, and boot that from CD. You can run chkdsk and do some file recovery from there.
ETA: you’ll need a WinXP disc to build the image file grinsen edited this message on 03/29/2010 10:58PM |

Aha! I do have a recovery disk after all. Sweet. I’ll look into this after the chk dsk is through doing its thing. |

Yuck, good luck man.
I accidentally smashed my hard drive one time with my elbow (don’t get me started on how poorly situated the hard drive placement is in Dell XPS’s) so I empathize with how irritating hardware-related issues are.
And also being clueless with computers. |

Look on the bright side. At least you’re not trying to figure out what’s wrong with this set up.
