Getting the RPG itch | |||||||

Well, if he wants something different. Personally, I like games with more story, so I don’t play Diablo-likes very often (though Torchlight was very fun). Haha, if you replaced your vid card you might actually try to run Dragon Age. I had nooo idea its minimum specs were so low. It’s probably because it was designed for consoles. The graphics are admittedly not that great. |

Not sure, haven’t opened up this comp since I’ve bought it. Mainly because I haven’t been able to have the chance to upgrade.
Yeah yeah, prebuilt computers suck. |

I’d actually recommend Puzzle Quest. I know it’s technically a match three game, but the combat system works really well, with a suprising amount of strategy. Then again, due to it’s casual nature it may not be your cup of tea.
I see Baldur’s Gate was already mentioned, and as a semi-companion piece the Icewind Dale series is pretty good. It’s much more combat orientated than it’s brother though, and it can be somewhat frustrating.
Also, I remember having fun with the shareware Exile/Avernum series, but looking at the website, the full versions seem a tad expensive, and I’m not sure how well they hold up now.
Good luck finding something! |

In that case, you may want to look at gyromancer, by popcap and Square-Enix(!). It has a similar style of gameplay, but with somewhat higher production values.
Then again, I’ve only really played the demo, so yeah. |

IWD is more of a numbers game if anything. BG was also pretty combat focused, but the mathematical side was stressed a lot more in IWD.
I’m surprised to hear people liked KOTR’s story, but hated the combat. Sure, it’s not an exact replica of the Infinity Engine, but the pause system is the most effective compromise between real time and turn based and it can always be ignored, if desired. |

Scully I refer you to this: http://www.forumwarz.com/discussions/view/23007-other-games post 23 in particular.
I would chide you forcefully for not having played those games yet if it weren’t for the fact that I haven’t played any of Dorian’s recommendations yet either. |

£17.99? That’s crazy expensive for a 10 year old game, especially seeing as the entire Baldur’s Gate series can be picked up for as little as £5 nowadays. Was it really THAT good?
At least it’s optimised it for modern OS’s, I suppose. |

Still, it’s not a lot of money considering that it’s, y’know, Planescape Torment. I’d buy it at that price if I hadn’t completed it already. It’s worth more.
In other news, I need to mention The Spirit Engine 2 in this thread, because I can never recommend it enough. It’s a great game that has basically not been marketed at all, which is why you’ve never heard of it before. Did I mention that it’s a great game? Go download the demo here. |

King Krimson Posted: Yes, it is. Graphics become obsolete very fast, good writing never gets old. And Planescape is not only very well written, it’s thought-provoking.
Nillo Posted: Hm, I’ve played the first one for 2-3 hours but I’m not a fan of side-scrollers, so I lost interest. It was extremly well done though. |
