On this very Sunday, Germany elects a new Bundestag. It is our Parliament. For the last 4 years, we had a “große Koalition” which means, the two traditionally biggest parties form a coalition. This has happened before, in the late 1960’s. Since then, this model has the image of an emergency case.
Let me tell you something about the funny side of proportional representation!
With now 5 parties in the Bundestag, it has become quite hard to find majorities. It is very likely that the CDU, party of Chancellor Merkel, will win the election, but they need a partner. They want the FDP, liberal democrats who tend to be too liberal when it comes to ethics in economy. On the other hand, they are not liberal enough to even talk to other parties about possible coalitions. That’s the main problem of the SPD, minority partner in the recent great coalition. The social democrats nearly lost their complete left wing to newly founded Linkspartei, led by former SPD boss Lafontaine. Only together with the Green Party and the Linkspartei the SPD could form a majority. The other problem besides the FDP is, the SPD promised not to worh together with the Linkspartei, at least under the current party leaders. So the only remaining question for this Sunday is, will the conservatives (CDU / FDP) obtain a majority? If not, some interesting alternatives await us: SPD CDU SPD
I really hope for a left majority, but have my doubts. Most likely we’ll get another 4 years of a great coalition, which is not the worst in times like these. Eventually it will collapse and open up for new possibilities within two years. Log in to see images! |

Better than a two party system that will never ever change. |

It’s also better than a many-party system where your choices are a bunch of ****ers lying about their principles, a bunch of ****ers who no longer have any principles, a 3rd party that never actually wins, and a profusion of tiny single-issue parties that wouldn’t know what to do if they ever won more than a handful of seats.
If weren’t for the third party I’d just have empty-quoted Cheins… as far as actually controlling the country goes, it’s a 2 party system and those 2 parties are about as bad as each other. I think the one currently in charge needs to have some time spent in opposition to remind the of the idea that abusing power means they lose it, unfortunately the current opposition are also terrible. Really would be nice if Party #3 had a hope in hell of carrying it off for once.
(Imaginary Points go to anyone who knows which party I’m referring to at each point in the above) |

England… Tories are lying about their principles, Labour don’t have any principles, and the Libdems are the fabulous persons who don’t win anything. |

Lol, we have to choose between a conservative robot male reproductive organpuppet and a yankee liberal who hasn’t lived in canada for about 34 years up until trying to topple the current government. we also have the socialist new democrats, who are run by an bumhole who will never get elected, and the conservative greens who no one really cares about even though they have a relatively sane leader, even for a politician.
tl;dr wacky politics in canada lol.
edit: also the only political advertisements on television you ever see are attack ads.
I spoil my ballots because with ^ this kind of **** there is no one worth voting for. Melanin-Enhanced Individual edited this message on 09/27/2009 10:28AM |
