My normal process is to narrow the number I’m looking at by downvoting all the ones I really dislike/are spam entries – the ones I don’t even need to think about, then refresh the list and start up/down voting ones that are clearly one or the other, trying to pitch it so about half fall on either side. Probably a slight weight to downvoting ‘cause I’d rather give stronger support to the relatively few I actually want to win.
With that in mind, today’s ideas… the “downvoting the ones I would not even consider” step lasted much longer than normal, and then for most of the remainder I felt I had good reason to vote down. Either because the item described was not hardware, or it was mostly/entirely about porn, or it was written in that “lulz, i’mma be insulting” tone because apparently that’s what some people think is funny. Only left a handful that I felt were worth supporting.
Whilst I’m posting I’m also sort of annoyed that I forgot to make a picture submission. But if I had it would only have been near-identical to the ones we’ve got, so I guess I saved myself the effort. Wheeee. |

Umm… I’m a bit unclear as to why you need to post a new thread about this when we have so many already. |

I don’t know is why, but I wasn’t responding to something said in any of the existing threads, so the thought didn’t really occur to me.
E: I can move it if that would be better… or just … whatever, I felt like saying something, I said it, not so bothered what happens to it now. man-man edited this message on 09/17/2009 4:33PM |

I’m actually impressed 90% of the entries weren’t downvoted in the first hour like usual. I guess Hacker equipment doesn’t rev people up like Piercings do. Log in to see images! |

I just wish people would even make a slight attempt to shop their images or make them different even slightly. Every one of the piercings save mine is untouched, straight from Google. |

I don’t care where they get them from and if they’re doctored or not. I just look at the final result. |

I checked Google, only found one of them… clearly my Google-fu is lacking something today.
For images, in my mind the ranking is (in descending order of voteability) a well-done edited/self-created image, then something lazily copied that is actually very fitting, then something edited that isn’t really all that good, then the lazy copies that don’t even manage to be good.
Actually a terrible shop job probably ranks lowest of all – at least a ripped off stock photograph tend not to look like ****. |

No, this was a tough image to scrounge up a picture for. You’ll have to dig pretty deep to find where this round’s submitters got their pictures. mterek edited this message on 09/17/2009 7:30PM |

Kidding? When I googled Finger Webbing Piercing I came up with 4 of these; turn your SafeSearch Off, if that makes a difference

Quoting for relevance.
Here’s hoping there’s at least some entries for the Wikipedia print edition that aren’t one of the 2 images littering the first page of Google (you’ll know the ones if you’ve searched anything like “Wikipedia printed”, plenty of copies from that guy who -wait for it- printed Wikipedia). The printed book made from the German Wikipedia is also easily found, would at least be slightly different, but is actually not that good an image.
Viewmaster was pretty similar… the problem’s endemic in item ideas that are actually real things. The pictures are right there for the copying. Still, can’t criticise the Viewmaster ones too much, all I did was adjust the colours to make it look better and brighter and I won with that. Felt like I’d cheated a bit, but I’m not saying no to a win.
E: I suppose this isn’t a problem if you’re not concerned with the source of images, but it feels cheap to just directly copy something… like Shii said, at least make it a little different. man-man edited this message on 09/23/2009 11:51AM |

If there’s a topic already to talk generally about Itembuildr (rather than the more specific subjects about everything getting downvoted, or such) then I can’t see it, so I’m going to put this here.
For the 4D Rubik’s Cube I was expecting to see the exploded-view of computer simulations of extra-dimensional Rubik’s Cubes, fresh off the first page of an Image Search (e.g. this or this), but either it wasn’t there or they’ve all been -5ed in the first hour. Either way, I’m glad I’m not seeing those, that would have been unoriginal and lame.
Edit: Also, I did not know that Item images could be animated. I am not sure I like that… all hopping around like that… man-man edited this message on 10/01/2009 4:23PM |

They were there. I know because I killed one of them.
My image was -5’d without a second breath though…at least the item I submitted survived the first hour. :< |

I’ve grown rather weary of all the meta-humor. It’s not cute anymore, it just looks like bum-kissing now. |

So that soulstone thing finally won… how many times has that been submitted and rejected before?
Clearly this is a sign of the impending apocalypse. That, or a sign that the barrel is being scraped dry. |

This image has got to be the funniest image submitted for itembuildr in a long, long time. It deserves to win and should very well do so. |

^This. I submitted an image yesterday, and it was the first image I legitimately worked on. I spent the better part of an hour doctoring my photo to prime coolness, and I had high hopes for it. However, when I saw that picture… I was overcome with awe. That picture deserved to win. And i applaud whoever submitted it. |

So… almost everything in the Ideas section got -5ed pretty ****ing fast. And we’re left with a meta-entry that’s kinda ****.
Fun times. |
