I’m sure many here have played Nethack (those who haven’t, download it now, it’s free), and anyone who has probably has experienced a very interesting game every once in a while. So please share some interesting moments.

Tonight I decided to play it, and resumed a game from awhile ago, in which I was a monk. I was in Minetown, and for some reason I couldn’t get through a pbumage to the next area. So I decided to wander around Minetown and see what happens. The random number god seemed to hate me more than usual, because panthers, a ball of light that blinded me, which caused me to kill a nearby halfling by mistake, killer hornets, soldier ants, and a unicorn were spawned randomly in the town. I activated explorer mode when I was leaving, just to see what it did, and was able to get through the pbumage and into the next area. In the next area I slaughtered gnomes, got polymorphed into an elf, ended up being seduced by a nymph, and got stuck in a spike pit, crawled out, and fell into a regular one right next to it. All was fine until I crawled into a three room corridor and picked up a cursed rock I couldn’t drop. So I was stuck there, tried to dig my way out, but that only caused a rock to fall from the ceiling into the pit I dug, then prayed, which did nothing. Then I was constantly attacked by gnomes, elves, and wererats (which I transformed into several times afterwards). Eventually I just let myself die.

I was too lazy. But after that day, I always turned off auto-pickup. I altso saves time when your invetory is filling up.

I’m going to bumume you suffered a YASD (yet another stupid death) or two. I recomend you check out the wiki, it has all you need to know about the game.

I also recomend you try a run in Explorer mode (press shift+x in a game), when you die it gives you a prompt Die?(y/n), if you answer n, your character has his/her hitpoints reset. Basically it gives you free range to experiment.

I’ve never played Nethack – pretty much the only two roguelikes I enjoy are ADOM and DoomRL. That said, yesterday I completed my first ultra ending (Avatar of Order) after more than five years of playing, which is pretty awesome.

I had another character that was aiming for an ultra ending earlier, but I messed up and had to restart. The problem was that I couldn’t gain enough experience; I went through the quickling tree and ate everything so my base speed reached over 200 and caused my character to suffer extreme penalties to experience gain, which made it impossible to get to level 45 in order to receive the Filk quest from the bumbumin prince. This time I was a lot more careful. I made it a point to kill the Eternal Guardian several times in order to ensure that I had enough experience to proceed. I recommend the Eternal Guardian since he respawns when killed and does not have a ranged attack. It is trivial for a spellcaster with seven league boots to kill him any number of times. It is also worth casting Slow Monster on oneself right before slaying him to get a bigger reward.

I’ve played several roguelikes and I have to agree with Nillo ADOM and DoomRL are my favs.
