AT&T blocks 4chan | |||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
“Firing one of the first shots in the net neutrality war, AT&T has blocked 4chan’s /b/ image board. AT&T subscribers are unable to connect to /b/ and /r9k/ (both of which are hosted on img.4chan.org). However, subscribers can get on any of the so-called «worksafe» boards that 4chan.org offers.”

You can find various other articles about it around the web . What do you guys think ? I know it’s 4chan and all, but if they are allowed to do this, it really sets a precedent for this kind of thing . Don’t want to get all slippery slope here, but this doesn’t really bode well for the future of the internet . |

Edit:Turns out it was just a timeout.
I find the censorship of the internet to be horrible. However, it is bound to happen as most who care about it are also the non-violent hippie type that those in power tend to ignore. Xylon edited this message on 07/27/2009 7:32AM |

This is indeed a really slippery slope and as soon as you start to censor anything it will all go to **** inevitably. But one key aspect is that this can’t go unnoticed. Mainstream media in the U.S has to pick this up and people have to care, unless that happens ISPs can keep blocking areas of the internet and continue to be their usual douchbaggery way.
A storm is brewing on the horizon, and a ****storm it is. Echuu edited this message on 07/27/2009 7:41AM |

Frankly, I think everyone on the net would be a lot better off if someone just walled up 4chan, and left them there to drown in their own acgreat timesulated filth. They stopped being funny/witty a long time ago. |

The problem with this is pretty simple. Who gets to decide what is or is not objectionable or appropriate? If ISP’s are given free license to block objectionable content it will not be very long till sites like this one are gone the way of the pbuming censor. |

From http://www.centralgadget.com/att-blocking-access-to-portions-of-4chan-2336/
Update (8:45 PM 7/26): After over an hour of trying, we finally got someone from AT&T corporate to provide a statement. AT&T has confirmed that they are “currently blocking portions of the internet site 4chan.org”, but states that they are “following the practices of their policy department.” |

Yes, I’m well aware of the ‘who watches the watchmen’ problems inherent in such endeavours. And I’m against internet censorship in general (excluding child pornography and other things which are agreed under international law to be illegal). I don’t find 4chan ‘objectionable’ per say, it’s more that they are just a waste of space, time and energy. Petty, childish, repetitive and frankly un-amusing are words I’d use to describe the whole sordid mess. Any humour and wit that could once be found on the site has long ago retreated to find better things to do. Which is my reasoning for walling the population in and leaving them to choke on their own ‘Mudkipz’ and ‘Advocacy canines’. |

You see, this is not about weither or not you are a fan of 4chan.
This is about ISP providers deciding they have the right to dictate what you can and cannot do on the web. Sure, it is their bandwidth (yeah we pay for it), so they can say “Our services cost X, and you cannot visit these sites”, but think about it.
AT&T was testing the waters, pure and simple. You may not like 4chan, but howlong until one of your favoprite sites winds up on an ISP block list if things like this happen again, or continue?
Forum Warz (and it’s forums) have rather questionable content. Maybe AT&T will block it (or another site you like next) to test and see how people react.
I really think this was a test, and we will be seeing more things like this in the near future. |

slippery slope stuff aside, since when do we say it’s not their right to do what they want to do with their equipment? They don’t have an exclusive monopoly on providing internet service. Perhaps another company can make a selling point of the fact that they don’t block anything. |

Indeed that is true.
The problem is if a powerhouse like AT&T does it, other companies will follow suit. I am sure they will hide behind “FOR THE CHILDREN” as to why they are doing it.
Deals will be made with website admins and kickbacks will follow (especially with smaller ISP providers) – if you block X.com, Y.com will pay you _____.
The scary part of this is there are some people who love in rural areas who, other then Hughes net in the US, only have one maybe two options for ISPs. As for Hughes, have you ever priced their service? Ouch…
Of course I can post about all the bad things that could happen, that might never happen all day, and it will not make a single diffrence. In the end, the companies will decide to do what they want to do, and it will happen.
People can scream “free speech” all they want, but this is “free enterprise”.
Still, this is something people should not just blow off because they don’t like 4chan (I have honestly never been there). Staunch edited this message on 07/27/2009 10:31AM |

bumuming this story ever becomes true, what ****ing right does AT&T have to dictate what is and isn’t appropriate?
Unless the argument was that /b/ is a terrorist site, which only those morons at Fox would believe. |

That’s what I find to be the problem with this. Especially in smaller towns where you are limited to one ISP. |

see, now this is a good point. I’m from North Dakota, originally, and your options are much more limited rurally. But to some extent, living rurally is your choice. You sacrifice some things for it. Television has always been pricey and difficult to get in rural areas.
Internet service remains not a right, but a privilege and a luxury. Ergo, if AT&T wants to do that, they’re welcome. I don’t want my provider to do something like that, so if my provider tries that, I will switch. |

Maybe I work at AT&T and decided that a lot of things you like were tasteless and things no one cares about . It’s the principle of this, not the site . Just saying . |

I absolutely object to any online censorship, but I still have to admit my 1st reaction was “lol.” Basically, what Fortunato said. They actually do have the right to do this as a corporation and this is not the first time it’s happened. Comcast, I think? was blocking Bittorrent awhile ago, plus they and others have a certain per-month gig usage, which is basically the same as the old days when you had to pay per hour for internet. Even though I’m not “rural,” I do have very little choice – sort of either and either/or 1 cable or a couple dsl’s. Our cable company is Mediacom and they haven’t blocked anything or limited use at all yet. They don’t even charge or restrict usenet. |
