I really want to know, since my homeland was termed a “state” and or “province” by multiple sources when I grew up learning it was a country?

If you need to know what place it is. It is Taiwan.

Edit:

Noticed it was getting views but no one’s posting maybe because they thought I was being stupid -_-

This is the one I’ve heard about in dispute for the “minimum” requirements to be it’s own nation most recently:

Well, depending on the context, “state” is often synonymous with “country” or “nation” – but all those terms seem to have some social and political nuance, as well. Taiwan really is a difficult case, in a lot of ways, because it’s politically infeasible to ignore the PRC’s claims over Taiwan, but at the same time there are clearly several reasons that Taiwan is separate from the mainland of China socially, culturally, and politically. Defining a country by nature really has to balance the views of the people within the given disputed territory, and the views of the outside. A country is hardly a country if nobody recognizes it as a country (like the example of Sealand given in the previous post) but likewise, if the people within a territory have no cultural ties or sense of unity and nationalism, calling it a country won’t make it true.

So I guess what defines a country is a territory that can both foster a sense of national unity and resolve outside disputes in order to gain recognition on a global basis. In broader terms, a country can be those territories where the line isn’t so clear cut, but the balance still remains.

Guam isn’t a country; it’s a colony.

Well there are some small african countries are willing to recognize Taiwan as a country. Though a number of those countries are turning away though.

Taiwan can never gain international recognition as an independent country simply because China will never give up its claim. I guess when China bascially controls the economy , no one in their right mind dares to irritate them in any degree.

China doesn’t need to send an army over to invade. China already has a bunch of inside people brainwashing the Taiwanese. Seriously there are Chinese people (The KMT party) calling for unification. The Taiwanese president has an US green card prepared so it doesn’t really matter to him what happens to Taiwan and its people.

Basically you need:

– Independence (duh)

– Autonomy (of most kinds)

– Recognition (from other countries)

– Territory (duh)

– Government

Quoted for truth.

This is pretty much the reason Taiwan isn’t really going to be recognized as a separate country – that, and the fact that it’s not really completely united in whether or not its populous wants to be an independent nation; like you said, there are a lot of people from China there, as well as many Taiwanese who are “brainwashed” as you say it, or just who for whatever reason think they’d rather be part of China (and I’m not pbuming judgement as to whether or not it’s right or wrong)
