Writing This is really, really trivial, but it annoys me nonetheless.

Herbaceous, biennial, dicotyledonous , and flowering.

When you have a single left facing parenthesis [)] after a quotation mark [“] or an apostrophe [‘], it will post in a winking smiley face [like “Log in to see images!] in place of the parenthesis. Go ahead and try it.

Why? Does this make sense for any reason? Is it a bug? Can we fix it somehow?

It’s possible to still include quotes in parenthetical asides by putting an extra space between the ” and the ) e.g. (as the idiom goes: “there’s more than one way to skin a cat.” ), but that’s weird, nonstandard, and aggravating.

Could we maybe get a “do not display graphical smilies in this post” box to check, or something?

This drives Falcon4 nuts, too.

It’s not a bug, it’s the way bbcode works. And it’s easy to work around the way you say. And to avoid accidents, use the preview function.

But I do sign “disable smilies” as a checkbox option. It’s pretty standard on other boards I’ve been on.
