Was there any rule against tubmail spamming before this(or now even)? I had heard this was a fairly fruitful approach to get the flamebate and/or friend e-peen in the past.

Yes it has been used to good effect by other people in the hunt for the friends peen.

Considering that MST spent 30 BPs on the stunt (with a rough value of at least $30) I’d be surprised if the cost for additional email quota was more than the revenue incurred by the expenditure of BPs. Yes I know that in all likelihood those BPs were already purchased but it does take them out of circulation.

Honestly, as I posted in the obligatory unban Tom post, I had no idea it was a problem or against policy. I don’t think any of the peenwhores who’ve used it or some combo if it plus ads/contests had any clue. We’ve all openly talked about it in many threads.

I feel terrible that I’ve advised people to use this method and hope that I didn’t actually contribute to Tom choosing the method he did.

To stop spambots just putting a delay isn’t enough.

CAPTCHA (http://www.captcha.net) could be a good all-around solution.

And he should. This sounds like they made a new rule after the damage was done to justify the ban and as far as I can tell the damage was neither intended nor foreseeable by MST. Also I’d love to play a mission like this, it sounds awesome. CZ shouldn’t ban MST, they should hire him.
