Luck and it's effects, an independant study. Again...

Ok, nobody has any idea what luck does and quite frankly, I’m not actually that concerned about it. However I’m doing absurd amounts of runs (12 for each of 6 different characters) on threads in order to figure out what .moar files can be found there since that I do care about. Initially I had hoped to get a percentage chance of finding file x in any given forum but after doing 12 runs through Denture Chat with 6 different characters Luck ranging from 2 to 78, there are some fairly noticeable patterns in the Files I’ve gotten. Nothing is conclusive yet of course, that would take thousands of runs, but I will continue to do only Denture Chat until one of my characters completes the file RectumScan 7.0 (full + keygen).prog, since noone has posted what that file does yet (bumuming it’s been completed at some point) and so far it’s only been found in Denture Chat (according to the postings).
I’ll post my findings from Denture Chat here and possibly instead of using a % chance of finding any given file, change it to how I’m seeing Luck affect the file drop chances based on some rather basic statistical analysis as well as the average drop rate (Very Common to Very Rare).
I’ll simply update my postings here until I finish up with Denture Chat and will likely do so again with Jojo’s, Rice, Rice, Baby and a few more until a pattern is agreed upon, or at least enough of one to determine how I will set up the wiki for dropped files.

At low luck he got tons of the male reproductive organ enlargement file, and at high luck he didn’t get nearly as many.
So, can you rate the file as common when it’s common at low luck, but almost rare at very high luck? I don’t think ratings like common, rare, v. rare really apply when the results slide based on your luck rating. |

Actually I was thinking 2 sections, one covers how common it is and another how it is affected by luck. I think some are barely affected by luck and others can either become less common or more common. so Luck = up, no change or down with how common being there for forums like How Stuff Breaks where that stupid Andy male reproductive organ file is about 85% of everything you get. Those 72 Runs are going to suck…

Okay, it took me 11 Runs with 6 characters in order to finally get RectumScan with one of them and I am lucky as sin since it was my Hacker that got it and despite it being a .moar that only appears on Denture Chat, it happens to be the best program file for Hackers out there right now. Given that you only get it in a forum where you don’t even have the spider yet, I’d say that makes sense and makes me doubt that the Pink Floyd file is as bad as the wiki says that it is.
Anyways, this thread has been updated with my runs (WAY TOO MANY!!!) and here is my interpretation of it all.
Don’t worry at all about Luck for the most part…
Sure, if you’re grinding a thread for that elusive file pump it up, that is if it actually helps, but while simply going through the game those points are better spent elsewhere. The gain to gifts and .moar files is for the most part negligible, and certainly not anything worth spending upwards of nearly 18 upgrade points on unless you have the points to spare. If you really need to save the Flezz, throwing them into Upkeep will help you more in the long run most likely since bringing that to level 20 will almost eliminate all maintenance costs. Also, despite pieces coming in some rather skewed patterns, I do not believe it to be really affected by Luck to any significant degree. This may change in other Forums but for now I think that it’s random for all intents and purposes.

Now if I combine the Luck ranges that are close to each other (Low Luck being 1-25, Medium Luck being 26-50 and High Luck being 51+) and turn it into percentages of files found, I can more easily see what happens. Below is a table that shows how many of each file I found followed by it’s percent drop rate and then the drop rate based on the groupings. (Sorry about the formatting, it’s easier to see in Editing if you really care since it doesn’t remove extra spaces.)

What you can see is that some files change drastically, some not so much, and others change but only until you hit medium Luck at which point it’s basically the same as with High Luck.
Therefore I will add this to the wiki and will indicate whether or not files become possibly less common (-) definitely less common until Medium Luck (—Log in to see images!, definitely less common until High Luck (—-), possibly more common (+), definitely more common until Medium Luck (++), definitely more common until High Luck (+++) or remain about the same (=). At the same time I will have a ranking for rarity included which will show the rarity among the 3 different Luck groups.
1 – 0% – 2.5% 2 – 2.5% – 5% 3 – 5% – 7.5% 4 – 7.5% – 10% 5 – 10% – 15% 6 – 15% – 25% 7 – 25% – 40% 8 – 40% – 80% 9 – 80% – 100%
I don’t have the actual equations for anything, but this is about as accurate as I think we can get it and obviously it will take a very long time to get all of the info down, but I hope to do another Forum every 3 days until I get them all.
Finally, I think Denture Chat is going to see a lot more visits since apparently Rectum Scan is the best program currently for Hackers with +6 Defense, Charisma and Luck as well as +150 Processing Power. I am so happy that I managed to get it for my Hacker instead of anyone else during my 11 day grind-fest. |

TLDR
Here is my interpretation of it all.
Luck does affect the rarity of certain files, making some less common and others more common. As far as individual pieces go, it doesn’t seem to have much of an effect if it does at all.
Therefore…
Don’t worry at all about Luck for the most part…
Sure, if you’re grinding a thread for that elusive file pump it up, that is if it actually helps, but while simply going through the game those points are better spent elsewhere. The gain to gifts and .moar files is for the most part negligible, and certainly not anything worth spending upwards of nearly 18 upgrade points on unless you have the points to spare. If you really need to save the Flezz, throwing them into Upkeep will help you more in the long run most likely since bringing that to level 20 will almost eliminate all maintenance costs. Also, despite pieces coming in some rather skewed patterns, I do not believe it to be really affected by Luck to any significant degree. This may change in other Forums but for now I think that it’s random for all intents and purposes.
Of course this is just Denture Chat but I will save the results of every other Forum as I do them and should my opinion change or should I learn anything significant I will post and bump this thread to let you guys know.

I’m not surprised you’re not finding any effect from Luck there. Try your runs again on the higher-level forums, and I’ll bet you’ll be able to see some real results.
