RAID is for a) paranoid people and b) speed freaks with extra cash. Since I’m neither, I put everything on one drive.

Seeing as though hard drives usually show distinct signs of failure before actually failing… *ahem*

I had a drive die 2 weeks ago. 360G. Can you guess which brand?

MAXTOR.

Good thing I had a 500G WD hard drive with enough space to copy everything over to.

That said- I have had a WD drive fail on me also a long time ago.

The only brand that hasn’t failed on me yet is Seagate. But I know if I run one of them long enough it will die also.

All recovered, zero pain whatsoever. A whole ****ing ****load of bad sectors though, but most of my data was really small anyway (hand written code isn’t that big).

Now let’s see if I can get the rest of the data back… priorities, priorities. Log in to see images!

Good thing I formatted the data partition as FAT32, which spreads its directory entries all over the drive, so there is no single point of failure… if the main directory isn’t usable, it’s more of a pain in the bum to find the files, but they can all be reliably located. NTFS is more “**** it”. Log in to see images!

Wow. That’s insane. In my experience, Maxtors never ****ing die. Some older ones run kinda hot, and quite loud, but they never… ever... ****ing die.

I have some totally indestructable Maxtors that are 10Gb, 20Gb and 40Gb in size. I also have some Maxtors that ACTUALLY DIED around 80Gb and 120Gb size. I stopped using them after that.

fwiw, I still own a 250MB (yes… MB) Maxtor IDE drive that was used in a 8mhz 286. It was fun watching it defrag. And it still works. Log in to see images!

Yeah, every techie in town says this place blows for technical jobs. I need to move somewhere with higher intelligence, evidently.

Seriously, I even think I need to find some place smarter. In this city, where I’ve lived my whole life, I am always, without fail, the one with the solutions, the one with the knowledge, the one who inspires “oh my god how did you do that”... yet on the intarnets, I’m just “meh”.
