Fatalism, Chapter I: Intro, OutroAppiah frowns at the reception lady. He presents her with the card he got from Quixote. “Look, Appiah belong here, non? This de-straught? 2341 Glacier Drive? A man, he tell me come here. Je suis ici. Not have ID with me. Maybe leave it in back pocket of my three-piece suit.” The last is said with considerable irony, but Appah nevertheless tries hard to make puppy eyes at the lady. (view post) |

Fatalism, Chapter I: Intro, OutroBack. Sorry about that
Appiah, having long ago vegetatively walked by the man **** was barking at, is now in the lobby. As the receptionist asks for ID, he looks all kinds of uncomfortable.
“Je suis Appiah Jawarah. Quixote, he send me here. You not need ID card to see that Appiah exist. You take my word for it, mademoiselle.”
He adds, hopefully, “You have nice dress and pretty eyes?” (view post) |

Fatalism, Chapter I: Intro, OutroAppiah walks off into the night, **** in tow. He can’t pay cab-fare, and… well, he can’t pay bus-fare, either. So he’s reduced to walking, no matter how long it takes. (view post) |

Fatalism, Chapter I: Intro, Outro“Maybe I should try for job as janitor. I am qualified.” Appiah’s broken English is light with irony.
He squints at the card again, “Better know address if we go there, non? (view post) |

Fatalism, Chapter I: Intro, OutroAppiah grabs one of the cards, squinting down at it, “De-strought.” He clearly has no idea what it means, or even if it is actually a word.
He glances down at his ragged sneakers, ratty jeans, and loose hoodie. “I think les gens in that office building not want me in there. He eyes the ragtag crowd around Quixote. “We supposed to work together, non? Anyone have idea?” (view post) |

Fatalism, Chapter I: Intro, Outro“Nihilism? Quoi?” Appiah blinks suspiciously at Quixote, clearly having second thoughts about the bargain that he’s made.
Meanwhile, **** slinks away from Whiskey, looking slightly happier. (view post) |

ITT: Let's play Doom: the RoguelikeOnce more unto the breach, dear friends!
Step forwards towards the wall (forwards and to the left?), so you are out of its firing arc. Use medkit, edge towards the gap in the wall, hopefully in a way still without making yourself visible to it. When it comes into the gap, put run on, and charge the ****. Close up, they don’t use their firearms, and you’re one brutish thug! (view post) |

Fatalism, Chapter I: Intro, OutroAppiah looks troubled. “Je ne c’est pas. That is what witches do, hurt random people. But witches keep their work secret. I think you are not one of them, but one who has been hurt by them, monsieur. All things are in the hands of Allah, but maybe we will act as his gloves.”
Meanwhile, **** looks significantly happier than his master, humping away.

Fatalism, Chapter I: Intro, OutroAppah hisses, “Witchcraft.”
He does not say this in the “torches and pitchforks” manner, or with a religious tone, but rather with an air of severe indignation; it’s clearly nothing less than he expected. He doesn’t sound particularly surprised, either.
The black man shakes his head sadly, “C’est tres duree, to leave my daughter. But if I am bewitched, it better we not see each other. I am with you. Only way to kill witch, club or strangle. Bad luck to spill blood – Appiah help you there, monsieur. Still, I have ****.”
Appiah glances around; the small piebald dog is trying hard to mount Whiskey. “****! ARRETES-TOI!” (view post) |

I'm developing a roguelikeRe: the lighting.
If the setting was some kind of building (asylum, cellar of a big-bum hospital, military bunker, whatever) that had lighting, you could have the lights randomly flicker on and off, by turns either lighting the whole complex or hiding it in darkness. And for extra lulz, either provide the player with no lighting of his own, or very limited lighting – like a flashlight with limited batteries or something.
What I had in mind here was kind of Riget (Riket?) a la Lars von Trier. I think Stephen King made a ****ty derivative work on it called Kingdom Hospital, but I hear that’s not so good. Basically a ****ed up, psychedelic hospital where everyone is going quietly (or not so quietly) insane, the staff have a wierd secret society, and there are satanists in the basement. Half of the time you (the viewer) don’t know whether to laugh or hide under the sofa, gibbering. In that way, it’s not just the character who is insane, but everyone else, and possibly even the building itself. To take that further, you could have a list on which you roll every 100 or 1000 ticks, with things like: nothing happens, level changes, spawn monster, lights go out, etc etc.
Oh, and when you take drugs, things go back to normal, meaning the weird changes etc stop Log in to see images!.
In any case, my suggestions would be to use either a contemporary or contemporary fantasy world if you want the horror aspect. At least for me, medieval generic fantasy is not particularly scary, even with tentacle-enjoy (no wait, was that a good thing?). (view post) |
